where is the love?

In my attempt to carelessly spend money yesterday - - I started looking for a fun, new, [possibly] funny, exciting running t-shirt

Not a "running shirt" but like a shirt to wear after running to the grocery store, dry cleaner, Peanut's summer camp to explain why I look so bad.  Ya know, so fellow shoppers, workers, critiquing mom's could say, "Ohhhhhhh, she must have just gotten done running".  Even though, I'll probably end up wearing it on days I look bad and there's been NO run in sight.  See, I'm a thinker.

But I kept finding crap shirts like this:

And this:

Why all the hate?

Am I not a "runner" if I only run indoors?!?  I personally know the answer to that.  but . . [and it's a BIG but]. . . . why are there so many who think otherwise

Do you guys hate treadmills?  If so, why?  Is it just the boring factor?  Lay it on me.  I'm ready.  I want to know!

If the treadmill makes you happy then embrace your love of the motorized mat and worry not about other's thoughts.

i've been reading your blog for a bit, but had to comment on this one:

i absolutely LOVE the treadmill. i like that i can zone out and not worry about my pace, i can watch tv, i don't have to worry about being raped/murdered....the list goes on. i also love that my joints don't hate me.

i've often wondered too, if i can consider myself a "real" runner since i only run on the treadmill. then again, i don't know many runners who are running 50+ miles a week, treadmill or otherwise!

do you put the incline up on yours to simulate the outside better? i've read various views on that, on both sides. i've started using an 0.5% grade, but maybe i need more.

Ok so I finally completed this 7 mile loop around the lake yesterday. It took me FOREVER. Like I was thinking about ur PR and how fast I would have to run to get anywhere near that assuming I could ever run that many miles in one go. So I think anyone who doesn't think you're a "real" runner is out of their mind.

Also I like the treadmill. I miss it. I'm a gym rat at heart but unemployment has me going outside where the running is free. Which is good, but I feel more focused when there are numbers in front of my face.

I have done many runs on a treadmill. I have in fact trained for a marathon on a treadmill...20 miles on a treadmill isn't fun, but when there is 3 feet of snow outside...Or when it is 117 degrees hot outside...you just have to run inside.

a versatille runner can handle anything...indoors, outdoors etc. its RUNNING that we like, right?? i feel the love...indoors, outdoors...no matter! :-)

First, I want to say if you like treadmills and they work for you, that is really awesome - and you are a runner if you run inside or outside.

They don't work for me. I hate them with every fabric of my being. I have really tried to like them. Honest.

For me treadmills are so... confining.

BUT I am an outside kid - I enjoy being outside when I run no matter the weather.

I don't hate treadmills... we just don't get along very well. ;) I have nothing but respect for you t-mill runners!!!

The treadmill isn't my favorite but I'm forced to do a lot of my runs inside (esp in the summer)because I live in southern Alabama and it is over 100 degrees almost every day! Plus, I work nights and I don't get up until the afternoon on most days. Outside is definitely better though!

I was going to email you last week and tell you that about 4 miles in to a treadmill run I felt like stopping but still had 4 miles to go .... BUT then I thought, "Don't be a wimp Jeff, heck this wouldn't even be a warm up for Emz!" ... and I kept going and going! So thank you for the inspiration. With the SE TX humidity the treadmill has been my best friend!

I heart my treadmill, seriously. I would not have started running again without buying a treadmill this winter. I could not have run last week with a new baby in the house without our treadmill. Plus, I have gotten to see so many movies I've wanted to watch that noone else in the family wanted to see. Running makes you a runner, inside and outside.

I think the treadmill can be very useful when training. Right now, our temps are hovering in the triple digits and we have
90+% humidity every day. So, if I had access to a treadmill, I would totally use it. Even though I do prefer the outdoors, I don't hate the treadmill. I guess it just seems more like working out than a run outdoors ever has.

Run on!

Not a big fan of the treadmill, but it's less a condemnation of the treadmill, than a love for being outdoors, despite what the weather is throwing at me. Although the treadmill would have been the smart choice on most days, I did all my winter training outdoors. 16 miles in 4 inches of snow with freezing rain actively falling got me sore in places that running shouldn't even know exists, but I just feel the call of the fresh air.

Regardless if the treadmill or the open road are your weapon of choice, it's all about joining the battle.

How about: "I've been running, what have you been doing?"

Or: "I ran 15 miles this morning, what did you do?"

PS: We drove the route for your Top of Utah marathon. It's beautiful, but I kept thinking "26.2 miles is a looooong way".

I don't hate the treadmill. I am very thankful for it on days when I cannot run outside for whatever reason. No hate here! :)

Hate is such a strong word... I don't mind using a treadmill if its the best available option... There are just so many better reasons to run outdoors. Here's a few:

1. The repetative action of a treadmill increases your chance of getting certain repetative motion injuries that can be prevented due to the slight variation of each stride caused from running outdoors.

2. I train to race and my races are outdoors on the road so training on a treadmill is not as specific.

3. Long runs on a treadmill are boring.

4. Its nice to be able to control your own pace.

Not a runner?! Right. You've run a 3:20 marathon, but you're soooooo not a runner. *eye roll*

I WISH I could like a treadmill, but I just simply despise it. And, yes, it's the boredom factor. It wasn't so bad at my old gym in the town I moved from. Their treadmill area had techno/dance music playing real loud and you were overlooking the rest of the gym so you could people watch. Now the one I go to has the treadmills facing a mirrored wall so there's nothing to watch but yourself.

Maybe if I had one at home I'd feel differently.

Its deffinetly the lack of scenery... My head is not strong enough, theres no tv show good enough to ammuse my eyes to make me think that running on the treadmil is like running outside.. It is better then nothing though..

I run on the treadmill the majority of the time, mainly because of my kids and my husbands, and it does get boring. Thankfully I have a television in front of it, so I can watch a movie for really long runs, or just jam to the music channels. It really makes me appreciate my outdoor runs!

ajh said...

I hugely prefer the outdoors which is why I am running outside in spite of paying for a gym membership. But I use it a lot in the winter/fall/spring. I feel people should run where it works for them. Who cares where?

Jill said...

You became my bff when you told me you did most of your running on a treadmill. Me, too! I'm a cold-weather winter wimp, I have severe spring allergies, I hate the heat, and fall allergies aren't the best either. I do get outdoors some, but 20 on the treadmill with a good movie onboard doesn't bother me in the least!

I actually don't HATE the treadmill with capital letters and I've never called it the dreadmill :) ...however, given the choice, I pretty much always run outside.

Your mom needs to make us t shirts with the sayings that she came up with. You know how I feel about my treadmill. I will be away from it for almost three weeks! I am considering coming home early so I can do my runs on it and not have to beg a sister to use hers. Miss you!

Harold said...

Dreadmills definitely bore me. Even when I run outside, I need to take routes that don't go straight more than a 3-4 miles at a time. I get bored easy. I guess I have running ADD...lol!

You're so right - why all the hate? I don't have a treadmill so I do all my running outside but man if I had one .. And hey - you're so SMOKIN' fast that who cares what people think. I don't think you should wear a tshirt anyway because then people can't see your abs.

I'm not a huge fan of the treadmill because it is actually harder for me to run my normal pace on it. Plus, it just gets so boring when I have to do a long run. But, it is truly a lifesaver when it comes to fitting runs in. I can run while my boys watch a show or nap. I can run in the gym while my boys are at kids club. I can run on the TM in the winter when it's FREEZING outside. But, I would take running outside any day over a TM.

I’m lucky enough that I can run outside throughout the year. I can’t answer this…I’ve never run on a treadmill. I would if I have to and I’ve been thinking about some charity run to do. One thought I had is a 100 miler on a treadmill. Crazy for anyone and even worse for someone that’s never run on one.

Laura said...

I would never bash the treadmill...I know for me I actually run faster outside and picked up some bad habits from the 'mill but that's just me. I actually quit my gym after....a long time so have no access to a treadmill. Ask me how I feel about this when it is winter.....

Matty O said...

wow did you ask for a barrage of comments on that post?! haha.

Ultimately Caratunk Girl sums up my sentiments 100%.

They confine me, they make me feel like I am a guinea pig, they hurt my shin splints BIG TIME, and I break treadmills. Every time I run on a treadmill they break.

At college, the one started to smoke really bad and then shut down... never to work again. Treadmills and me, you see, we just don't get along :)

Kudos to whomever can last on those dreaded things though!

Without my mill, I couldn't train during the week. I love it. Don't get me wrong its boring and I prefer outside. But without it, I'm nothing. (ok that's a bit dramatic)

I love my treadmill. Love it. It has many miles on it's 9 year old body and still manages to humiliate me.

Colleen said...

I used to hate runing on treadmills, but then I discovered the "hills" setting, and now I love running hills inside. Esp. since we have no hills outside :)

Angie said...

Umm, so you run a 3:10 marathon right? Apparently the treadmill's working for you. They're just jealous.
